Buying a Preschool Backpack

Congratulations, you have a preschooler! If this is your first time sending a little one to school, you may be feeling overwhelmed not only with emotion, but also with the fact that you now need to purchase school supplies. In particular, you probably need to buy a preschool backpack.

Preschool Backpack Options

1. Skip Hop ($25) – These backpacks come in adorable animal shapes and have an insulated pocket for food storage (which isn’t really a big deal when your child will only be at school for two hours). Being that it is a smaller backpack, it likely won’t be large enough to continue using once your child reaches Kindergarten and it might not be big enough for preschool items either. Really, this backpack is more suitable for daycare than preschool.

2. Cheap and easy – Head out to any Walmart, Target, or similar big box store and you will see that there are an abundance of backpack options in the $10-$15 range. Typically these bags are adorned with your preschoolers favourite character (Spiderman, Frozen, Cars, Barbie, etc.) and are the top choice for the kids. While the lower price tag is appealing, you should keep in mind that you get what you pay for, and these bags will not likely last long; so you might have to purchase another bag midway through the year when this one falls apart!

3. Obersee ($30) – The Obersee backpack also has an insulated front pocket, which a bit unnecessary for this age. Also, many preschools like students to take lunch kits out of their backpacks and place them on a shelf for easy access at snack time. Again, this makes the insulated front pocket rather useless unless you opt for a large reusable snack bag instead of a lunch kit. The Obersee backpack is larger than the Skip Hop backpack (large enough that it should be able to transition to Kindergarten), yet still fits a 3-4 year old perfectly. The best feature of this backpack is that it contains a several handy pockets for papers, a water bottle, and pencils.

4. Crocodile Creek ($30) – This is our top pick for a preschool backpack. Bigger than both the Skip Hop and Obersee backpacks, Crocodile Creek backpacks are very durable and come in fun designs. In the front pocket is a place for pencils, small papers, and other small items. A Crocodile Creek backpack will easily last the preschool years and is big enough to use in Kindergarten and the primary grades.

Skip Hop, Crocodile Creek, and Obersee preschool backpacks are available at most major online retailers in Canada, including Indigo, Amazon.ca, and Well.ca.
