Back-to-school season, what a wonderful time of year, right? Here are some of the things we love and hate about sending the kids back to school:
1. Routine: Oh the loveliness of having everyone up and going in the morning, and the resulting productivity. Except for fact that we now have to get everyone up and going in the morning . . . every single morning.
2. New stuff: Fresh school supplies. New clothing, running shoes, backpacks, and lunch kits. Labels to make sure nothing gets lost. The only thing that isn’t wonderful about all the newness is how empty our wallets are afterward. Would it be wrong if Santa visited in August instead and brought mostly back-to-school gear?
3. Fundraisers: September always brings a gazillion school fundraisers. A few are fun, all are important (your school PAC needs funds!), but most result in an overeager child wanting us to buy 10 entertainment books so he can win some cheap prize. A prize which costs considerably less than the 10 entertainment books.
4. The sense of organization: The day before school, we’re ready to kick some butt and earn the status of organizational ninja! But, two weeks later we’re surrounded by a mountain of school notices, agendas to sign, reminders of more fees to pay, tired kids, and very little of that initial sense of organization. And, our dreams of being organizational ninjas fade once again.
