Halloween marks the beginning of candy season. Really, from October onward it feels like our kids are being bombarded by junk food until Easter. They get Halloween candy, followed by a gazillion sugary Christmas treats, after which the candy hearts start being passed around, until finally can see the light at the end of the tunnel through a hollow chocolate bunny. If you’re tired of contributing to the sugar highs and sugar crashes, but don’t want to be the mom that gives out boxes of raisins, then this post is for you.

Halloween Candy Alternatives

1. Tattoos or stickers. -From toddlers to preteens, you can’t go wrong with tattoos or stickers.

2. Small toys. -Hit your dollar store and grab some small bottles of bubbles, small Halloween-themed stamps, or some spider rings. Also, Costco always sells big bags of small-sized Play-Doh containers to give out on Halloween.

3. Stuff that glows. -If it’s in your budget, give out glow sticks. Kids love them and it will help to keep them visible as they walk around the neighbourhood in the dark. Glowing rings or rings that light up will also do the trick!

4. Bring freaky fruit to the party. -Thanks to Pinterest, you can make a freaky fruit platter that looks just as good (if not better) than the cupcakes and cookies that others bring to the table.

5. Do something completely different. – Instead of trick or treating, turn off the porch lights and cuddle up on the couch (dressed up, of course) for a special family movie night. Snack on homemade popcorn (with a few candies added to the bowl) and watch a new-to-you kids movie, purchased especially for your Halloween night in.
