The polls are in. We asked and the kids answered! Parents everywhere want to know what are the best school lunch ideas… well, the kids have spoken and top 5 ideas are as follows:
1. Bento style. Otherwise known as a plowman’s lunch, a farmer’s lunch, or simply a snacky lunch. Bento style lunches consist of a variety of foods arranged in small containers. Often they consist of crackers/pitas, meat or other protein, veggies, fruit and occasionally a sweet treat. The kids we asked loved the simplicity and variety of eating bento style!
2. Wraps. Fill them with tuna salad, cream cheese and cucumbers, ham and cheese, cream cheese and meat . . . the possibilities are endless when it comes to wraps. The fun pinwheel shape is easy to make and fun for kids -making them more likely to eat their school lunch!
3. Nut-free peanut butter sandwiches. So many kids love a classic peanut butter sandwich but, with all the allergies around, a real peanut butter sandwich just isn’t an option anymore. Companies such as WowButter have stepped up to the plate and created nut-free products that taste like peanut butter. They even include stickers that you can attach to the outside of the sandwich container just in case a teacher or lunchroom supervisor is concerned it is actually a nut product.
4. Freeze-dried yogurt. Forget the mess of putting yogurt into a container and get rid of the extra garbage that comes with yogurt tubes. We discovered freeze-dried yogurt and our kids discovered that they love it more than any other yogurt they’ve tried. No mess, no garbage.
5. Hot lunch. Break out the insulated thermos, hot lunches are making a comeback! Whether it be left overs from the night before, a freshly heated up soup or even a hot meat sandwich, kids are fans of a warm meal at lunchtime. Many teachers these days also have a classroom microwave, which students can use to heat their lunch.
