Perhaps you have already read Dana’s article on Toddler Busy Bags (if you haven’t had the chance yet, be sure to check it out!) and now you are ready to jump right in to making some of your very own. If you are feeling overwhelmed, just take a deep breath and rest assured that it isn’t really all that daunting of a task. To help make it even easier for you we are sharing some of our favourite busy bags and walking you through building them step by step!

Button Snake

Materials Required – 1 piece of ribbon per snake, 1 button per snake, various colours of felt cut into various shapes and sizes with a slit cut in the middle

Directions – sew a button onto one end of the ribbon and a piece of felt onto the other end.

How to Play – simply instruct your child to thread the loose pieces of felt onto their snake. If you have more than one child you can give them each a snake and see who can build the largest snake!

Simple Sewing Animals

Materials Required – 1 package of foam cards, 1 marker, scissors, hole punch, shoelaces

Directions – 1. Using the marker, draw whatever animal or shape you want on the foam card, then cut out the shape using the scissors (depending on the age and skill level of your child, you can decide how complex of a shape you would like to create for them). 2. Using the hole punch, punch holes around the exterior of the shape.

How to Play – Your child uses the shoe lace to weave/sew around the shape. Once they are done, have them undo their creation!

Letter and Number Tracing

Materials Required – Cardboard paper, marker, plastic bag or lamination, dry erase marker

Directions – Neatly write the letters of the alphabet (both upper and lower case) or numbers on the cardboard paper, either laminate the paper or enclose in a clear plastic bag.

How to Play – Have your child trace over the letters and numbers using the dry erase marker, when they are done you can simply wipe it clean and start again!

Colour Match Up

Materials Required – clothes pegs, glue/glue gun, scissors, paint samples (2 of each colour)

Directions – after selecting your paint samples from your local hardware store, simply cut a small piece off of each colour you wish you use and glue it to the bottom section of the clothes peg.

How to Play – Mix up the clothes pegs and have your child find the matching sample. This is a great activity for colour recognition and it also helps with fine motor development!
