Dear My Real Review:

I had a new baby in early June. Now that the days are getting warmer, I’m worried about whether or not I’ll be able to tell if my baby is getting too hot. I’m scared about serious complications like baby heat stroke. What steps can I take to keep my baby cool this summer?

Dear Summer Baby:

Common sense goes a long way when it comes to preventing baby heat stroke and protecting your baby from the summer heat: keep your baby in the shade, never leave her unattended in a vehicle, and dress her only in a diaper on the hottest days (babies do not need to be bundled or dressed more warmly than grown-ups). Make sure she is staying hydrated too (only breast milk or formula for babies under 6 months)! If you’re breastfeeding, you may notice that she wants to feed considerably more on hotter days –this is a good thing! Also, when a mother holds her baby skin-to-skin on a warm day, the mother’s body temperature will naturally cool to help keep the baby’s temperature regulated. Although it may seem a bit odd, lots of snuggles on a hot day is helpful for your baby.

Finally, make sure you are aware of the danger signs of overheating and heat stroke in a young baby. We recommend checking out this article on Heat-Related Illness from HealthLink BC. As always, if you have any concerns, contact your care provider right away. In an emergency, call 9-1-1.

Wishing you a fun and safe summer with your new little one!
