Monthly Meh –Drinks for Kids

Each month we feature products that are neither spectacular nor horrendous. Really, they’re just “meh”. We’ll tell you why.

Drinks for Kids that are Meh

While some of these drink choices are marketed to adults, they’re popular choices among kids too. We think you could find better drink options, but these certainly aren’t terrible choices either (well, except for #5).

drinks for kids

1. Sunny D – For decades it has been marketed as juice, but it’s not. Yes, you’ll find the recommended daily intake of vitamin C, but you’ll also find high fructose corn syrup and other junky ingredients. As a random side note, Nicole finds that Sunny D brings up a strange sense of nostalgia related to an obscure drink called Beep that she used to drink at her grandmother’s house in the 1980′s. The ingredients in Beep are similar to those in Sunny D (and not ones that Nicole wishes her kids to consume on a regular basis).

2. Sports Drinks – Sports drinks, such as Gatorade and Powerade are vitamin-enriched beverages that are designed to rehydrate athletes during and after sports. The effects of these beverages are not measured in children’s bodies, and in fact the levels of vitamins are meant for adult bodies. While beverages such as these are great at replenishing electrolytes, it is probably best that they remain a special treat and not an every day choice – for adults or children!

3. Coconut Water – So healthy and hydrating . . . yet tastes so disgusting unless mixed with some other type of juice. Blargh.

4. Yop – Yop has no artificial colours or flavours, which is great. But, it’s drinkable yogurt and, really, that’s kinda gross.

5. Kool Aid – Okay, we added Kool Aid to our “meh” list and then realized we could not think of any redeeming qualities that this drink has (despite the insistence of our kids that vibrantly-coloured artificial dyes are good somehow). So really, Kool Aid is not “meh”, it’s bad.

Tell us: What drinks for kids make your personal “meh” list?
