The season of warm weather, long weekends, and vacation time is here! We asked our favourite foodie moms from across Canada to recommend their favourite picnic recipes for your family to enjoy.
Veggies:
Fresh summery vegetables all tossed together in a light dressing… really, could it get any better than that? Merry from Merry About Town recommends two delicious salad recipes that are a definite must for an outdoor gathering. Try her Asparagus, Tomato and Bell Pepper Salad and her Kale and Brussels Sprout Salad with Pear and Bacon.
Veggies can also be prepped in advance and then grilled at the picnic! Family Fun Canada has a great recipe for you to try: Summer Vegetable and Fresh Herb Grill. We think this dish would be the perfect companion to some juicy burgers!
The Main Course:
Did someone say burgers? If your favourite picnic spot has BBQ pits, then check out this great basic burger recipe from Canadian Living. The Canadian Living Burger is a great picnic recipe as it can easily be modified to fit the tastes of your family members!
Looking to step things up a notch? Julie Van Rosendaal from Dinner with Julie suggests bringing a savoury tart that can be served hot, room temperature, or cold. Try Julie’s fabulous Ham and Mushroom Tart with Rosemary and Gruyere.
Dessert:
Ice cream is the perfect dessert for a warm day, but it’s tricky to take on a picnic… until now that is! Try this recipe for Ziploc Bag Ice Cream (which can also be made in a coffee can) from our friend Anne Radcliffe at Food Retro. This low-tech recipe is so simple and fun that the kids can make ice cream while the adults relax. The end result: a fun treat that will delight everyone at the picnic.
