My oldest is in Kindergarten and I’m worried that this year she’ll be told that Santa isn’t real. If she asks, how do I answer the questions, “Who is Santa? Is he real?”

Dear Saving Santa,
We wish we could give you some simple, straightforward advice, but this is one of those situations where only you know best. You know your child, you know what she needs. In other words, some children need the truth -their trust is you will grow and they’ll enjoy the fantasy of Santa in the same way they enjoy other kinds of make-believe. Grab a children’s book about this historical Saint Nicholas to answer the question, “Who is Santa?”
Other children will cuddle up with you, watch Polar Express, and be assured that the Jolly Old Elf exists for at least another year (they won’t give up the fantasy, no matter what their friends say).
If it is time to say goodbye to unquestioning belief in Santa and watch your child take a step closer to the world of grown-ups, make sure they know that they have highly classified information. You might be surprised to know how many Kindergarteners are in the know, but have been well-trained to keep the truth about Santa a secret from their friends.
