Dear My Real Review,
My oldest child is now 2 years old and is getting into everything, we have a large yard with a pool and I am so nervous about letting her outside to play. Can you please let me know of some ways to help keep her safe?
Worried Mama
Dear Worried Mama,
Your concerns are certainly valid, especially around the pool, but there are lots of things you can do to ensure the outdoor safety for all members of your family!
Pool Safety – Large pools, both in ground and above ground, should be fenced in and the gates should ideally swing closed automatically. Even small kiddie pools can pose a threat, so be sure to empty those when not in use.
BBQ Safety – Teach your child that the BBQ is something that only adults are allowed to touch. Even when not in use, always encourage your child stays clear of the BBQ, that way when it is in use, they will already know to stay away!
Power Tools and Lawn Equipment – Keep the kids inside when operating any tools such as mowers, trimmers and chain saws, and always ensure that items such as these are stored in a secure location when not in use.
Relaxation and Play Areas – You should always be on the look out for loose boards on decks and loose rocks on patios. For raised decks, be careful to ensure the railings are at regulation heights and that the rungs aren’t placed too far apart. While hammocks and swings can be wonderful to lounge in and play on, they also can pose a strangulation hazard for curious little ones, so be sure to either store hammocks and swings when not in use or be extra careful to watch your little one when they are playing around it.
Summer is such a fun time for toddlers, and with some careful precautions you can let them explore your backyard without worry. So slap on some sunscreen and get out there and have some fun!
